Grooming a Goldendoodle or Aussiedoodle Puppy~ Tips

Grooming a Goldendoodle or Aussiedoodle puppy doesn’t have to be a daunting task, there are many things that can make it much easier to manage.

Setting up a grooming routine when grooming a Goldendoodle or Aussiedoodle can help tremendously. Learning how to care for their coat, skin, and ears can help to keep your puppy happy and healthy.  Petting your puppy should be enjoyable. And when they are clean and matte free it is the best!

Maintaining a healthy coat also leads to healthy skin and a happy pup and a happy owner.

Here we will talk about how to ensure a healthy coat, skin, nails and ears.

Tips for Grooming a Goldendoodle or Aussiedoodle puppy

  1.  Check your puppy over often combing out any mattes. When your puppy is kept at a manageable length they should be easy to brush out and maintain. Using a slicker brush and/or metal comb can assist in this task. You will soon learn what their trouble areas are, usual ones include behind the ears, armpits, bottom and tail.
  2. Weekly do a thorough brushing and checking over for mattes. Check on the nails and trim if needed. Check ear canals, wipe clean and pluck or trim any hair to keep them clear of mites and bacteria.
  3. Bathe as necessary, this depends on your pup and preferences. Typically once every week or two is enough depending on your pups outdoor activities and level of exposure to dirt, mud and digging! Sometimes a paw rinse is sufficient but a full bath and a clean pup are a great way to keep a healthy matte free coat. Choose a mild Shampoo without harmful chemicals. Take care not to get water inside the ears. Wash rinse and repeat! Special tip~ keeping a hand on them at all times will prevent them from shaking and getting you all wet. It may take 2 towels to dry your fluffy pooch, or a cool/warm hair dryer can speed up the process.
  4.   When to start grooming a Goldendoodle or Aussiedoodle puppy? As soon as your pup is fully vaccinated is a great time to schedule their first grooming appointment. A regular schedule about every 6-8 weeks can help to maintain a manageable length. Be sure that they bathe, blow dry, brush, clean ears, pads, private areas and trim nails. An experienced groomer with also check the anal gland and ear canals.

  1. Tips for success at the groomers~ it is always wise to know just what you are wanting when you take your puppy in so that you can properly communicate it to your groomer. Take special care before their appointment to remove any mattes. This will ensure that there are no extra charges and heaven forbid a complete shave down. Matted dogs are uncomfortable and can be hard to groom. They can have sores under their mattes and it can take a long time to “fix” a matted dog. When a dog is severely matted the safest way to help is to do a complete shave. It is helpful to have several pictures for reference, discuss expected length and preferences on face, ears and tail. While there is a doodle cut, lengths and shapes can vary. You may not want the cute little curls on the end of your pups ears cut off on their first visit for example.
  2. Taking your Goldendoodle or Aussiedoodle to same groomer each time can help to provide them with an expectation of whats to happen each time they go and they will become comfortable with and even look forward to their grooming experience. Find a groomer that you are both comfortable with that provides a safe clean environment. Your groomer should clean thoroughly between their clients and have proper equipment to keep your pooch safe during their grooming. It is natural for your pup to be a little nervous as you leave them in an unfamiliar place but they should eventually warm up to their groomer and feel welcome upon returning to be pampered.
